Skegness’ newest railway station has been named runner-up in the prestigious Heritage Railway Association Awards – often called the ‘Railway Oscars’.

Seathorne Bank, part of the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway, opened in June 2025 at Skegness Water Leisure Park.

It features a restored Victorian Great Northern Railway coal office, a traditional platform, lamps, benches, and sweeping views across the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Although the top prize went to Oswestry station on the Cambrian Railway, Seathorne Bank held its own against the best heritage stations in the country.

John Chappell, spokesperson for the railway, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. We were up against some of Britain’s finest heritage railways, so being named runner-up is a real honour.”

Volunteers, local businesses, and Skegness Water Leisure Park all pitched in to bring the project to life. Funding support came from the UK Prosperity Fund, helping with restoration costs alongside contributions from the park and the railway itself.

The station has already picked up another award, winning a regional prize from the Federation of Master Builders for its renovation work.

Richard Shepherd, Chairman of the LCLR Historic Vehicles Trust, added: “Seathorne Bank has transformed the railway. Visitors can enjoy a shop, picnic area, and heritage displays, while taking in the stunning countryside views. It’s bringing more visitors to Skegness, which is great for the local economy.”

The Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway has a history of award-winning work, including restoration of the “Queen Mary” carriage and vintage locomotives, highlighting the skill and dedication of its volunteers.

Seathorne Bank station is now firmly on the map as a must-see Skegness attraction — and this “Railway Oscars” nod proves it’s a winner with heritage experts too
